A single-headed goblet drum with a bright, articulate voice. The darbuka carries most Arabic dance music.

Curriculum
4 chapters

Work through them in order. Each chapter ends with something to loop in the trainer.

01
Holding the drum
Posture, arm position, and how the drum should rest on your thigh.
6 min
  1. 1Sit with feet flat, drum across your left thigh (right-handed).
  2. 2Left forearm rests lightly on the shell — never grips it.
  3. 3Right hand hovers over the center of the head, relaxed.
02
Dum & Tak
The two foundational strokes and how to make each one sing.
12 min
  1. 1Dum: fingers together, strike near the center, let them rebound instantly.
  2. 2Tak: ring finger strikes the edge with a snap.
  3. 3Alternate D-T-D-T slowly at 60bpm until each stroke sounds identical to the last.
03
Your first rhythm: Maqsum
Loop the skeleton pattern until it feels automatic.
10 min
  1. 1Speak the pattern: DUM DUM tak DUM tak.
  2. 2Play it at 70bpm with the metronome.
  3. 3Increase 5bpm at a time up to 110bpm.
04
Ornaments: rolls and slaps
Filling the rests without losing the pulse.
15 min
  1. 1Introduce the sak (closed slap) on the off-beats.
  2. 2Practice finger rolls with alternating index/middle/ring.
  3. 3Layer one ornament at a time back into Maqsum.
